Qtel doubles broadband internet speed for free
Qatar Telecom upgrading customers from 512 Kbps to 1 Mbps without charge.
Broadband internet speeds in Qatar have been doubled with immediate effect, telecommunications provider Qatar Telecom (Qtel) announced on Monday.
Customers can upgrade to one Megabit per second (Mbps) from 512 Kilobits per second (Kbps) without any additional charges, Qtel said in a statement.
The improved speeds are among the first free benefits to customers as part of Qtel’s major internet upgrade for users of its ADSL and Moziac TV+ services, Qtel said in a statement.
Customers using the higher one Mbps or two Mbps service can move up to the two Mbps or the new four Mbps service – without additional charges.
The company said it will phase out the 512 Kbps service, and deliver one Mbps high speed internet as standard.
The move follows research released on Sunday from the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology in Qatar (ictQatar) showing that Qatar has made significant strides in IT adoption in recent years, with mobile penetration exceeding 120 percent, and internet penetration reaching 63 percent.
