There is just under two weeks to go before the fifth annual NME Innovation Awards.

NME has received a host of high quality entries from across the region. Each one offering a unique perspective into the challenges facing network vendors and professionals and the innovative and often times ingenious steps they take to overcome these challenges.

Judged by an expert panel, all the entries went through a rigorous process of careful review and in depth research before the winners were chosen. Of course, all of these winners will be revealed and honoured during the Awards function itself which is scheduled for the 18th of May at Grosvenor House in Dubai.

The last six months have undoubtedly seen major changes not just in the global financial landscape but also affected regional enterprises and their IT budgets. With projects cancelled, frozen or scaled back a newer, stronger ‘can-do’ attitude has emerged.

A look at the nominations shows that while the mantra ‘doing more with less’ has been followed in many cases there has been no sacrifice when it comes to quality and performance.

Spending and investments are being made with infinite care by more enterprises while best practices and regulations are being considered and implemented more. Never before have organisations been more aware of getting the maximum return of investment while pursuing the total cost of ownership.

There is no doubt that a measure of uncertainty still exists when it comes to IT spending and investments in network products and solutions. However when one considers the amount of investment still flowing into the region and the number of high profile visits from leading international CEO’s it is clear that the world still sees great potential in the Middle East.

It has also been a pleasure to see the number of so-called ‘smaller’ vendors entering themselves into the marquee categories taking on the traditional powerhouses. This continues a growing trend across the Middle East where performance is being prized above reputation.

The Awards is an opportunity for the region to come together and celebrate the spirit of growth and optimism that drives the networking community. With vendors, integrators and users rubbing shoulders and sharing ideas who knows what interesting and potentially groundbreaking relationships could be formed.

The NME Innovations Awards for 2009 are destined to be a highlight of the year and we look forward to seeing you there.
