Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) has awarded Motorola a 435 million Saudi riyal (approx. $116 million) contract to expand its GSM network to Saudi Arabia's northwest and southwest regions.

The contract signals the fifth major GSM network expansion that Mobily has undertaken with Motorola in the last four years with the intention of increasing its subscriber base in the Kingdom.

“The demand for reliable communications services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is growing and the Mobily expansion project of our GSM network will help to meet the demands and expectations of new subscribers in the western north and southern north regions,” said Khalid Al-Kaf, CEO of Mobily.

Early last year, Mobily claimed to have a market share of approximately 40% in Saudi Arabia.

This is the latest network expansion contract win for Motorola which has, over the last few years, also delivered GSM infrastructure solutions to the VNPT Group in Vietnam, China Mobile in China, and Celtel Nigeria in Nigeria.
