Enterprise software giant SAP has declared that the rapidly changing global economic climate means regional enterprises will have to find new business models and make better use of existing assets.

In his keynote at the annual conference of the company’s user group, SUG-MENA, José Duarte, president of SAP MENA said that Middle East enterprises are facing what he terms a “new reality”.

“It’s clearly not business as usual, what’s going on in the world these days. You can call it ‘Business Unusual’ because of the volume of change. It’s a common pattern – you see change all the time in our lives you see change but the pace of change and the quantity of changes that are arriving at the same time are probably the most price-effective to many of us and our businesses.”

Duarte also urged companies to “sweat” their assets and make full of the tools and applications that they already have available.

“Every economic downturn provides opportunity, and technology is the prime means of fostering the innovation, efficiency and competitive advantage needed to seize those opportunities. The key is being absolutely clear about the priorities of the business and investing accordingly. These areas should include business intelligence, operational and process excellence and non-disruptive innovation,” he added.

“The impressive number of registrations for this year’s SUG-MENA conference illustrates the importance placed on IT as an enabler of both immediate gain and long-term sustainability. The changing role of IT amid the economic downturn has been the hot discussion topic for IT CIOs and executives attending,” states Salem Al Angari, President of SUG-MENA.

“MENA continues to be a unique and fascinating region for SAP and SUG-MENA is the ideal platform to interact with customers and listen to their opinions and challenges,” added Duarte. “I have had many conversations with customers who recognise the need to invest for the future and look to SAP to lead the way, in spite or even because of the current economic uncertainty. Once again, businesses in this region are demonstrating their ambition and foresight and are leading by example.”
