Cisco sets up $100 million SMB technology group

Global initiative will be responsible for driving and developing solutions solely for the SMB market

Cisco has formed the Small Business Technology Group (SBTG) that aims to improve the productivity of small businesses around the world.

Investing $100 million in the global initiative, Cisco’s SBTG will develop technologies and solutions in six top priority areas – connectivity, security, remote access, productivity, customer interaction and customer support.

“The No. 1 priority for small-business owners is growing their companies, not becoming technology experts. Small businesses learn about and implement technology in very different ways than do large enterprises,” commented Sam Alkharrat, managing director of Cisco Gulf and Pakistan.

“In recognition, Cisco has transformed the way we communicate with small-business customers with a customized SMB-specific Website and marketing campaigns that focus increasingly on business capabilities and benefits of complete solutions rather than on products and technologies,” added Alkharrat.

The Group will comprise of dedicated sales, marketing, services and technology teams to service the sector, which has great potential in the Gulf region.

Citing IDC research figures, the SMB market in the Middle East is expected to account for more than a third of all IT spending by the year 2011, comprising of 70 – 80% of businesses in the region.
