IBM begins laying off staff

More than 2,800 already made redundant as American employees demand the company stop outsourcing jobs

IBM has already laid off more than 2,800 employees in North America, an independent website for IBM employees has revealed.

According to Alliance@IBM, the cuts involved staff in IBM’s software, sales and distribution divisions, though no formal company statement has been issued yet.

The Alliance had earlier predicted 16,000 out of 386,000 IBM employees worldwide would be made redundant in response to bleak economic conditions.

The news comes as a surprise to many as the company recently announced a 12% increase in its fourth-quarter earnings with a positive outlook for the rest of 2009.

With more redundancies on the cards, IBM employees in the United States have demanded the company stop outsourcing its jobs to other countries.

“There is a growing concern among employees that IBM will accelerate the off-shoring of our jobs. To offshore U.S. jobs in the middle of an economic crisis and rising unemployment is simply unacceptable,” said Tom Midgley, Alliance president.

The Alliance is working with representatives to push for legislation that protects US workers and calls for a full disclosure of IBM’s outsourcing of American jobs.
