UAE banks plan iris scan security move - report

Deal reached to bring in new technology following ATM fraud in UAE in September.

Banks in the UAE will soon introduce iris scanning for customers in an effort to improve security, it was reported on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Interior has reached an agreement with the UAE Central Bank and other banks in the country, according to Major-General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director of Abu Dhabi Police Central Operations.

“The agreement is expected to go into effect in January,” he said in comments reported by UAE daily Khaleej Times on Wednesday.

The new system, he hoped, would put an end to fraudulent transactions at banks and their ATMs.

Thousands of customers were affected by a regional wave of ATM fraud in September. Customers were told to change their pin numbers for their ATM cards in a text message.

The Central Bank of the UAE launched an investigation into ATM fraud following the spate of incidents and reportedly summoned officials from a number of banks to a meeting.

In an Arabian Business poll, carried in September, 75 percent of readers said they were unhappy about the way their bank dealt with the ATM fraud.

Of those, 45 percent claimed they had been left in the dark by their bank and had received no information about whether their account was affected by the criminal activity.

For another 32 percent, the action of their banks during the financial scam was the final straw for customers. They told Arabian Business that they were planning to switch bank as soon as possible because they were fed up with their bank's lack of customer service.

Only five percent of respondents said their bank had acted "excellently" during the crisis and had put them fully at ease about the security of the money they had with the bank.

I would hope the banks are thinking beyond the obvious. There is a potential to put this technology to better use. Cardless services, providing the users with access to their accounts and credit services by using their eyes. Call it blink technology if you like, but the implications are tremendous. Imagine walking into a store picking up stuff and just blinking at the checkout machine to purchase the goods. Are you thinking what I'm thinking - Minority Report!

Putting IRIS Scanning is not the solution, unless people are not well trained about how to use ATM ?
