Bahrain's telecoms regulator has agreed to extend the deadline for the submission of bids for the Gulf state's third mobile phone licence.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) had received formal requests to extend the deadline from the majority of registered parties.

And TRA chiefs said that companies would be given until the end of November to submit their bid - the original deadline had been November 13.

The TRA added that it will announce a new timetable for the evaluation of bids after the deadline has passed.

Bahrain-based telecommunications firm Mena Telecom is understood to be one of the companies interested in the licence.

Mena Telecom is an investment subsidiary of Islamic lender Kuwait Finance House, Kuwait's largest lender by market value.

Bahrain has two mobile telephone operators; Bahrain Telecommunications Co (Batelco) and Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Co (Zain).

Four companies have registered with the TRA for the third licence.
