Batelco has opened its new Next Generation Network (NGN) laboratory, which will help to train its engineers to manage next generation IP technologies.

The laboratory was officially opened by Batelco chairman Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, along with executives from Huawei, Batelco’s partner in the NGN project.

The telco is in the final stages of deployment of its NGN, a project which began in mid-2005, to replace the existing legacy network with NGN services to every household in Bahrain. Huawei has provided the core and access IP network technology, and will now work with Batelco on knowledge transfer projects.

Peter Kaliaropoulos, CEO of Batelco commented: “Our people are without doubt the most important element in the development and support of major new technologies and we therefore invest heavily on an annual basis to ensure we provide the necessary training facilities and programmes.

“Batelco’s continuing success as the leading telecommunications company in the Kingdom of Bahrain would not be possible without having qualified skilled teams in place. We will therefore continue to invest heavily in our people and provide the necessary training and development programmes,” he added.

The lab will train engineers Batelco and its subsidiaries, to give them the necessary skills to manage the network.

Zhang Haiqiang, managing director of Huawei said: “Full technical support will be provided to Batelco by Huawei for ‘Train the Trainer’ programmes at the new laboratory. Furthermore, the latest emerging technologies will be shared in a ‘Transfer of Technology’ initiative. Batelco and Huawei will support each other through all the initiatives that require the need for sharing knowledge.”
