Qtel has signed a major managed services deal with Qatar Airways, to host the airline’s entire IT infrastructure.

Under the 15 year agreement, Qtel will host all of Qatar Airways systems, including applications for flight operations, finance, human resources and internet bookings at its Doha data centre.

The systems will still be managed by Qatar Airways IT staff, while Qtel will provide state of the art hosting, to give the airline a reliable infrastructure with robust connectivity, and the ability to expand as necessary.

Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways CEO commented: “Qatar Airways continues to strive forward with ambitious expansion plans for our operations around the world. We require the strongest possible technological backbone to enable us to realise these ambitions.

“Qtel is a leading provider of communication solutions. We are confident they will be able to provide Qatar Airways with the best levels of support we need today to maintain and grow our business and enable us to reach new heights over the lifespan of this long-term partnership.”

Qtel was selected for the services deal following an international review of leading service providers, with Qatar Airways citing Qtel’s track record and state of the art data centre as reasons why Qtel won the deal. Qtel has a strategic partnership with AT&T, with Qtel’s Data Centre acting as the key node in the Middle East for AT&T’s global network.

The value of the agreement was not disclosed.

The initial phase of the deal will involve the migration of Qatar Airways systems Qtel’s data operations facilities in Doha, followed by a second phase where Qtel will establish a secondary site within Qatar and a data recovery site outside of the country.

Qtel chairman H.E. Sheikh Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani said: “We are delighted to sign this partnership agreement which will provide us with a firm basis to grow and develop together. Qatar Airways and Qtel are both globally-minded companies that see strong potential for international expansion at the same time as understanding our responsibilities to the people of Qatar. This shared vision forms the heart of the technology partnership that we have agreed today.”
