Enterprise distributor Tech Access’ CFO and senior VP, Umar Malik, is stepping down from his post at the end of month to pursue a new challenge outside of the industry.

Malik, who has been with the Sun Microsystems distributor for three and a half years, is set to join the Dubai arm of consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal as a senior director.

His departure is due to lead to a slight internal shake-up at Tech Access, at least in the short term. “They are not going to actually replace me as such because I had two hats — a CFO one and a COO one,” explained Malik. “I think what they are looking at doing is splitting the two roles quite distinctively. A CFO is obviously going to be appointed, but we have a controller so it is not a burning issue right now. And the other role, in terms of sales, is being given to someone else internally for the time being.”

That person is understood to be senior VP Saleh Tarin, who manages the Sun business for Tech Access in the region. All of the distributor’s country and regional managers will now report to Tarin until a permanent COO is found.

Prior to Tech Access, Malik worked at Oracle, IBM and PwC in consulting capacities, so the move marks a return to familiar territory. He will lead a 20-strong team specialising in turnaround and restructuring strategies for organisations in numerous industries, including IT.

“I have done finance, operational management and turnaround work so I think I have the right skill set to lead this kind of role in the region and that is what I am going to be doing. I felt it was time to move back to the consulting work,” said Malik.
