It’s that time of year again when the Windows team breathes a collective sigh of relief because the IT maelstrom that is GITEX and GITEX Shopper has drawn to a close.

GITEX is by far the region’s biggest IT show (and arguably the second largest in the world after Germany’s humongous CeBIT) and it was, as ever, packed to the rafters this year. Readers of this magazine also helped ensure that its consumer offshoot, GITEX Shopper grew once more, as over a hundred thousand bargainhunters flocked to Dubai’s Airport Expo to grab some great-priced computing and consumer electronics kit.

Part and parcel of GITEX week this year was the 2006 Windows Awards. HP ruled the roost by grabbing five coveted gongs, but the event also threw up some more surprising occurrences, with Oki grabbing best business printer and its competitor Brother performing better than ever before thanks to its cracking line of MFD products. Our new ‘best of the best’ prize however went to Intel, which blew the WinLabs techometer off the chart earlier this year with its Core 2 Duo releases.
