Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum opened the Gitex technology expo at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre on Sunday, kicking off the biggest week of the year on the region's IT calendar.

Sheikh Mohammed, also UAE prime minister and vice president, cut the ribbon at the official opening ceremony before touring the exhibition centre to look at the various companies on display at this year's show.

More than 3,300 companies from 83 countries are exhibiting at this year, including major international companies such as Blackberry, Dell, Du, Etisalat, Google, HP, Microsoft, Oracle, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sun Microsystems and Symantec, according to organisers the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Visitors will be able to check out the latest products and solutions first-hand fro the biggest brands in the ICT industry.

The trade centre said it expects more than 130,000 visitors to the show, now in its 28th year, over the next five days.

This year the show's keynote address will be given by chairman and co-founder of Sun Microsystems, Scott McNealy.

Gitex is open from 1pm to 7pm on Oct. 19, 10am to 7pm on Oct. 20-22 and 10am to 5pm on Oct. 23.
The exhibition is open to trade and business professionals only.

The price of a one-day pass is 40 dirhams and 100 dirhams for a five-day pass. Admission includes access to all events including Gitex Business Solutions, GulfComms, and Consumer Electronics. The Consumer Electronics segment is the only part of the show that will be open to the general public for free, on Oct. 23.

Taking place simultaneously at the Airport Expo Dubai is the Gitex Shopper and Consumer Electronics Expo, where the inaugural Gitex Digital Game World will welcome regional teams who will battle it out in a series of organised games and online tournaments.
