RTA launches green IT initiative

Dubai transport authority on Saturday launched an environmentally-friendly technology initiative aimed at reducing the amount of electricity it uses it all its buildings.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said the Green Information Technology (IT) initiative will give it better control over the power consumption of its IT systems, allowing it to saving money on electricity.

"RTA is keen to introduce the latest technological advancements, which have become the backbone of today's computer applications such as power-saving technologies, and use environment-friendly alternative energy sources to conserve natural and environmental resources in the UAE," Abdullah Al-Madani, CEO of RTA Corporate Support Services, said in a statement.

"This initiative is part of community oriented initiatives, which adds up to other initiatives sought by the RTA."

The RTA said more than 50 percent of its computer systems are already compatible with specifications of the Green IT initiative.

The RTA said its aim is to have all desktops and laptops 100 percent compatible with Green IT specifications over the next three years.

The RTA said more emphasis will be placed on using laptops, which it said are 60 percent more energy-efficient than desktops.
