Arvato Middle East Sales (AMES) and Abu Dhabi Media Company (ADMC) are using GITEX Technology Week to launch and promote their new website ‘GETMO ARABIA' (www.getmo.com).

The companies claim the site is the Middle East's first digital entertainment portal.

"GETMO ARABIA is designed to serve as an all-in-one entertainment solution for consumers who wish to download music, movies, games and mobile applications to their PCs, MP3 players and mobile phones.

The service will include international as well as local Arabic content," explains Ben Kuehn, vice president of advertising and business development at GETMO Arabia.

To use the service, consumers will need to buy service cards in stores in order to top up their accounts, although Kuehn reckons that sponsorship deals could see certain brands bundling the cards along with their products.

Downloads can also be directly paid for by credit card and Kuehn points out that other entertainment services, such as Apple's iTunes, don't sell content to users with Middle East billing addresses.

Content can be purchased on an item-by-item basis although consumers also have the option to purchase ‘GETMO Club cards', which allow unlimited access to content for one or more months.

Asked about the legality of the service, Kuehn explains, "All media downloaded from GETMO is completely legal. The content is licensed from content label companies and is protected by digital rights management (DRM).

"This means there are certain limits to the number of times you can copy and transfer the music to other computers and portable media players. Essentially, the consumers don't own the music but have the right to listen to it."

The service is said to be compatible with most multimedia mobiles, MP3 players and PCs. For PC users, the only requirements are a recent Microsoft operating system such as Visa, XP, 2000 or 98, Internet Explorer 6.0 or better and an internet connection.
