With a free to download software called Adeona, you'll be able to trace your laptop in the event that it's stolen or lost. All it takes is a short installation and a file save.

Step 1

Adeona has been making a name for itself online, as the first open source system that allows users to track the location of their lost or stolen laptop.

It uses the OpenDHT distributed storage service to store updates of the laptops location (by IP address) sent by a small software client. All you need to do is install this client on your laptop.

Go to http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/downloads.html and choose the download you want, depending on your OS. If you're using Windows XP/Vista, save and run the AdeonaSetup.exe file, which brings up the Installation Wizard.
