Intel has announced that processors based on its new microarchitecture will ship under the brand name 'Core'.

The first release from the new line, currently known only by the code-name Nehalem, will be branded as the Intel Core i7 range, and will include a version branded ‘Extreme Edition'.

The new microarchitecture promises to deliver improved performance and better energy efficiency, with better performance for hyperthreading.

Sam Al-Schamma, Intel general manager for the GCC commented: "The Core name is and will be our flagship PC processor brand going forward. Expect Intel to focus even more marketing resources around that name and the Core i7 products starting now."

The first Core-branded products are due to ship in Q4 of this year.
