Dubai Circuit Design (DCD) has announced that it has completed its, and the region's, first design for an advanced integrated circuit.

The chip design outsourcer, which is wholly owned by the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, has finished the test design for an encryption/decryption chip.

The 65nm processor was designed using tools and a design environment from Synopsys, and includes low-power consumption features.

Dr Jihad Kiwan, managing director of DCD, said: "The DCD team enjoys over 100 years of accumulated experience specialized in various fields of the IC design industry. With solid backgrounds and experiences gained from industry giants such as Intel, Texas Instruments, ST Microelectronics, Qualcomm, Wipro, and many others, the DCD team has set the momentum to position Dubai on the world map of the circuit design industry," he added.

Glenn Dukes, vice president of Professional Services at Synopsys, commented: "We consider Dubai Circuit Design's completion of their first chip design a major breakthrough not just for the company, but for the region's technology industry as well. There are significant technical hurdles to overcome at the 65 nanometer process node, and DCD demonstrated the talent and commitment to work through them.  We are pleased with the outcome of this programme, and look forward to future collaborations with DCD."
