Matsushita is aiming to exploit the recent battery recall crisis by upping its production of spark-resistant batteries. The Japanese company said it has boosted its production capacity of batteries insulated with heatproof layers to five million units per month, up from 100,000 in April. It will increase production of heat-resistant batteries for laptops first, and is aiming for half of all lithium-ion batteries it produces in 2009 to have insulated batteries, a spokesman for the company said, according to a report in Reuters. Rival companies Sony and Sanyo Electric Co have been seriously hit by recalls of millions of batteries after fears of laptops igniting. Matsushita currently has a 13% share of the global lithium-ion battery market, coming after Sanyo, Sony and Samsung.
