Dimension Data buys DPS, opens UAE operations

IT services company Dimension Data acquires Data Processing Systems (DPS) to form basis of UAE operations

IT services company Dimension Data today announced that it will launch operations in the UAE through the purchase of systems integrator Data Processing Systems.

Dimension Data has finalised the acquisition of a 51% stake in DPS for an undisclosed sum, which will form the basis of its operations in the Emirates. 53 DPS staff will join new recruits and internal transfers from Dimension Data to form a core staff of 80, based in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Georges Hannouche, CEO of DPS will take on the role of executive chairman of Dimension Data UAE. Hannouche told press in Dubai: "Our ambition was always to grow to be the number one systems integrator in the UAE; we made a lot of progress, but presently DPS is in fourth or fifth position, so the big question is always be how we will become number one?

"We were approached by Dimension Data, and after long negotiations, we have finalized all the details," he added. "I believe we will fill a big gap in the UAE market for high-end systems integration."

Dimension Data UAE will draw on the expertise of its parent company, which is headquartered in South Africa. The company recorded global revenues of $4.7bn global revenues in 2007, with $849m of that coming from the Middle East and Africa region.

In the Middle East, the company will brings its expertise in TCP/IP-based projects to the key vertical sectors of construction, hospitality, public sector and oil & gas, with a particular focus on intelligent buildings. The company has close ties to Cisco, and is a global gold partner for the networking giant, with plans for the local operation to qualify as a gold partner for Cisco as soon as possible.

Siddeek Rahim, managing director, Dimension Data UAE commented: "The opportunities in the United Arab Emirates are enormous and the demand for ICT solutions and services affords Dimension Data UAE with the potential for considerable growth. The adoption of ICT solutions as an integral component to the operations of buildings, and the trend towards the intelligent buildings, has resulted in significant opportunities across the construction, hotel and financial services industries."

The company has already signed a number of hospitality projects in the UAE, including Millennium Hotels, and two projects on the Palm Jumeirah development, including the Atlantis Hotel. The company also has some projects in Saudi Arabia, and is also looking to enter into the Qatar market, most likely through a partnership.
