Huawei has been selected by Etisalat to build a large-scale fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network in the UAE.

The Chinese vendor's GPON FTTH network is to provide ultra high-speed connectivity to households and businesses, via optical line terminals and optical network terminals. No financial terms were disclosed.

"It's an honour for us to join hands again with Etisalat to build its optical access network," said Tian Feng, president of Huawei Technologies, Middle East and North Africa. "We are committed to leveraging our innovative optical access solutions and extensive global application experiences to provide highly responsive services to Etisalat."

The move is part of Etisalat's strategy to shift to an all IP infrastructure. By the end of the year, the operator expects to have hundreds of thousands of its customers with last-mile fibre optic access.
