Tick... tick... tick...

It's never too soon to start thinking about Arab Technology Award entries.

Six months, one week, and - oh, six hours, give or take. That's how long you have before the 2008 ACN Arab Technology Awards.

Sounds like a long time, doesn't it? Sadly, it's not.

Two weeks before the Award ceremony, the judging panel will hand over the final list of winners to me - aside from the trophy engravers, no-one else will know the winners at this stage.

Six weeks before that, I will have sent the nominations - probably between 70 to 100 of them - to the judges. One week earlier, the final nominations will have come trickling in as IT teams, marketing departments and lone specialists across the region hurry to complete their entries, having belatedly realised that the deadline is actually real (sadly, I'm not even joking about this).

Now, we're already in August, suddenly only four months away. And as most people - or at least, most people who can - tend to escape to cooler climes for a good chunk of the summer, we can easily knock this down to three months.

Out of those three months, one of them will probably be taken up with getting approval from higher management to submit an entry on a particular project - double this for global organisations, or vendors nominating one of their customers.

Yet another month will go in arguing about which project to nominate, and whose job it is to do the nominating anyway. This leaves exactly one month to spend writing the actual nomination, out of which at least two weeks will be spent trying to speak to all the people involved - and in many cases, composing elaborate Power Point slides showing in minute detail the structure of a project.

Still, that leaves a whole two weeks, right? Well, sort of - although we will only officially launch the site next week, so that leaves: one week. Or, if you're a vendor with extraordinarily complex approval procedures, minus six weeks.

OK, so maybe I exaggerate - but only slightly. Because judging by the quality of the nominations last year - and some of the new projects we've come across this year - IT professionals around the region will need to get started now to ensure they show off their projects to best effect.

Luckily, we've given you six months - and a week - to work on it. Well, four months. Alright, three, Well anyway, you get the idea.
