Video games team Dubai Mirage have qualified as the official Middle East team for the Championship Gaming Series (CGS) 2008 Pan-Asian final.

The team won regional heats organized by Microsoft Xbox 360 and retailer Sharaf DG, and will now go on to compete in the Pan-Asia competition in Wuhan, China. Two teams will go through from the Pan-Asia competition to the CGS 2008 final in Los Angeles, to compete for a $500,000 top prize.

The regional heat was held at Sharaf DG's Times Square store in Dubai, where teams competed on Xbox 360 games Forza Motorsport 2 and Dead or Alive 4.

Aman Sangar, product marketing manager of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division Middle East said: "We are really pleased to provide this massive opportunity to the regional gaming community - a pedestal to compete and be recognized at a global level. The CGS is like the Olympic games for Electronic Sports and is one of the most prestigious gaming championships with the highest purse of $500,000 for the winning team. As gaming is growing in the region, this is a great time to involve the Middle Eastern community in the world of eSports competitions and bring great exposure to the local gaming industry."
