Jacky’s Electronics LLC, the number one electronics retailer in the UAE, has outlined the company's predictions for Blu-Ray technology following the defeat of Toshiba’s HD-DVD

Ashish Panjabi, Chief Operating Officer of Jacky’s Electronics, said: “We are expecting a surge of sales in the coming months, especially now that most brands including Sony, Samsung and Panasonic, have indicated their intention of introducing new Blu-Ray players during the year.

“Many IT vendors have also informed us of their intention to include Blu-Ray drives in their laptops towards the end of this year or early 2009, which is when we expect to see mass acceptance of Blu-Ray as the successor to existing DVD formats.

“There will also be increased demand for high definition LCD and Plasma television along with a price drop in Blu-Ray products,” added Panjabi. “With the emergence of Blu-Ray, it is imperative customers have high-definition TV.”

Ashish also predicted a sales boost for the PS3, Sony’s videogame console that comes with a built-in Blu-Ray drive.

Blu-Ray uses a high-frequency blue-violet laser as opposed to HD-DVD’s red laser. This is the principal reason for a dual-layer Blu-Ray disc’s storage capacity reaching 50GB, compared to 30GB for a similar HD-DVD disc.
