Alcatel-Lucent signed for undersea cable upgrade
Sea-Me-We 4 cable to get multi-million dollar upgrade to improve bandwidth for Middle East and Asia
The Sea -Me-We cable consortium has announced that it will upgrade its number 4 cable, to improve bandwidth for the region.
The contract for the upgrade, described as a multi-million dollar project, has been awarded to Alcatel-Lucent. The project includes upgrades to both sea and land-based sections of the cable, and is due for completion in 2009.
The 20,000km Sea-Me-We 4 cable, which runs between France and Singapore, is owned and operated by a consortium of sixteen carriers. The cable connects to 14 countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South East Asia.
Alcatel-Lucent was also awarded the contract for a new undersea cable for Telecom Egypt last month.
