MTN Group, a South African mobile operator, has selected Aircom International to provide network planning and consultancy services across all of its regional mobile operations.

MTN Group, which provides mobile services to some 54 million people across more than 20 countries in the MENA region, expects the agreement to help it build and maintain its infrastructure in fast growing markets, particularly in Africa.

Mobile services have grown rapidly in Africa in recent years, particularly with the introduction of pre-paid cellular services across the continent, and this has placed new pressures and demands on operators' existing networks, according to Karel Pienaar, MTN Group's chief technical and information officer.

"As our business develops, so too do the demands placed on our networks," Pienaar said. "With Aircom's help, we can maximise our network resources to deliver high quality, innovative and affordable mobile services and grow our business into new and exciting markets."

Margaret Rice-Jones, CEO, Aircom, added: "With this new group-wide agreement in place, all of the MTN territories can now benefit from Aircom's engineering and management expertise to boost the performance of their network and continue to provide services and opportunities to their customers across Africa."
