Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel), the largest telecommunications service provider in the Sultanate of Oman, is investing US$25million in network expansion, according to a report in The Oman Daily Observer.

The telco is expanding its network to cope with an unprecedented increase in demand for its services, Omantel’s sales director, Marc de Marcillac, told the newspaper.

“Our data circuit revenue is showing a 43% increase over the same period last year. In order to continue to demonstrate shareholder return, and to meet our statutory obligations of telecommunication service provision, we need to expand our network.”

The firm said it was expanding its fibre optic access network as well as building local access networks in locations including Al Khuwair and Sohar.

“We are expanding our transmission networks with a series of fibre optic rings all over the Sultanate, in Muscat governorate, in Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah and Al Dakhiliyah regions,” Marcillac revealed.

The service provider also said it will boost its metropolitan transfer rates to 10Mbit/s.

Omantel had a monopoly in the Omani telecommunications market until March 2005 when mobile operator Nawras launched on the market.

The new service provider, which is part owned by Qatar Telecom, succeeded in taking a 20% share of the Omani mobile market away from the incumbent within three months.

Omantel has since separated its mobile and fixed operations and focused on developing its data and internet service.

De Marcillac added that Omantel was expanding its ADSL broadband capacity by 30,000 lines above its existing 14,000 line infrastructure with the assistance of Siemens and Alcatel with which it had signed contracts, according to the report.
