Chip vendor AMD has strengthened its operations in North Africa by appointing Ossama El Deeb as channel manager to oversee its development in the Egyptian market. The move is part of a wider expansion plan in the MEA region that has seen new staff come on board and the recent opening of an office in South Africa.

El Deeb is well-versed in the ways of the Egyptian market having spent the last eight years working for the local subsidiary of office software giant Microsoft. His most recent role as business development manager saw him play a key role in fostering relationships with local OEM teams to build and support new channel initiatives.

As channel manager at AMD, El Deeb will be responsible for managing channel and partner initiatives with local allies and raising the profile of the vendor's processor and graphics business. IDC data for the second quarter seen by Channel Middle East shows that AMD controls just 7% of the processor market in Egypt, illustrating the battle it faces to curtail arch rival Intel's dominance.

In his new role, El Deeb is also expected to work closely with the government and private sector in Egypt and will be actively involved in the development of strategic channel marketing programmes and appointment of new distributors. On its website, AMD currently lists Asbis-owned ISA Hardware as its CPU master distributor for Egypt and Cairo-based Quest as its CPU regional distributor in the country.

"El Deeb brings on board an in-depth and hands-on understanding of the business and the needs of the regional customer which he gained in his former role at Microsoft," said Abdallah Saqqa, regional distribution and sales manager for AMD Middle East, Africa and Pakistan. "Egypt is a key market for AMD and ElDeeb's expertise will help us leverage new business opportunities in the country."

El Deeb will report to AMD's regional head office in the UAE.
