Facebook ban rumour false
No truth to previous reports about Facebook ban
Despite widespread UAE rumours to the contrary , the popular social networking site Facebook was not banned in the Emirates earlier this week. Instead, Etisalat - and therefore Etisalat users - suffered some technical issues accessing the site.
An official spokesman for the TRA today explained: "The site was never blocked. The people that couldn't access the site never saw a page that said the content was blocked. The problem is with the connection of the operator. It has nothing to do with the TRA."
He added, "We have heard from other users that they could access the site via another operator. When we block a site, it's blocked to both."
Quoted earlier this week in the Khaleej Times newspaper, a senior Etisalat official admitted the organisation had experienced a connection problem with the Facebook site, lasting approximately two days, but that this wasn't related to any kind of ban: "There was some connectivity problem for a couple of days, but the web site is accessible now. If there is a ban, a red message of Etisalat flashes across the screen saying the site cannot be accessed," the spokesman commented.
