Microsoft is claiming that the launch of its video game Halo 3 is the biggest in entertainment history after registering record sales of the game within its first 24 hours of release.

The software giant said last week that the game made an estimated $170 million in the US in the first 24 hours of its release beating previous sales figures set by the third Spiderman movie.

Figures for sales of the game in the Middle East have not been released.

The game, the latest instalment in the popular Halo series, went on sale in the region last Wednesday.

Microsoft said at the time it expected sales for the game in the first 24 hours of availability to be in excess of $150 million.
