Media PC sales flagging in the Middle East

Sales of media PCs in the Middle East lag behind those in major markets, a representative from hardware giant Acer claims.

Sales of media PCs are low in the Middle East compared to Western countries due to a lack of media content and lower broadband penetration, according to an official from hardware giant Acer.

In an exclusive interview with Windows Middle East at Acer's Global Conference, held recently, EMEA vice president Emmanuelle Accola stated: "There's not enough media content being supplied to the Middle East to make media PCs an attractive alternative for regional consumers. Moreover, there a huge percentage of regional users still using dial-up internet connections due to higher cost of broadband here."

He went on to add: "In contrast, almost all American and European consumers use a broadband connection and have plenty of content available, whether it be downloadable movies and TV shows or High Definition (HD) content via their cable entertainment provider."

This statement supports Windows' own findings that showed how Middle East users are unable to purchase and download legal paid-for movies.

According to Accola, regional sales of its high-end Acer L200 media center PC, first launched in 2005, haven't been as high as expected in this region. "We have sold some units in the Middle East region but not as much we forecasted. The majority of the units we've sold have been in the UAE," Accola said.

Accola did reveal however that Acer is in talks with global content providers to offer more movies and shows online to users in the Middle East, "in the near future".
