Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), organisers of trade show GITEX, has announced that 124, 317 visitors attended this year's show, which ended last week, down from 133,139 visitors last year.

In a statement, the DWTC said lower numbers on the last day of the show - the day before the start of the holy month of Ramadan - prevented the event from matching last year's visitor headcount.

Daily attendance on the first four days of the show was on a par with the daily totals of last year, it said.

This year's show attracted a higher number of decision makers, however, the organisers said, without providing specifics.

DWTC introduced a number of events this year including a Priority Club and a conference programme aimed at luring high-level attendees to the event.

Both events will be repeated at next year's show, which opens 19 October, DWTC said.

"This year, GITEX has risen to the challenges it faced superbly, with a high volume of business conducted at both the enhanced platform of GITEX Technology Week and the consumer retailing event of GITEX Shopper," said Helal Al Marri, director general of the DWTC.

Obstacles the organisers faced this year included the earlier timing of the event after it was brought forward to accommodate a dental congress in November.

Sales at GITEX Shopper, the retail component of the show, were up this year, rising 16% on year to $26.4 million (97 million UAE dirhams) from $22.8 million in 2006, the DWTC announced.

The seven-day GITEX Shopper ran alongside the main GITEX Technology Week although it was held in a different location and started two days before the main technology event.

This year's GITEX, which ran 8-12 September in Dubai, was rebranded as GITEX Technology Week and divided into three sections: Gitex Business Solutions, GulfComms and Consumer Electronics.

Other innovations at this year's show, the 27th edition of the event, included Gadget Glam, a fashion show featuring the latest products.
