3Com has announced the launch of a new system to protect wireless networks. The 3Com AirProtect Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) has been designed to address a range of threats associated with wireless networking.

AirProtect WIPS includes intrusion detection and prevention to prevent unauthorized access to the protected network, as well as preventing authorized users from connecting to unauthorized networks in their locale. It also includes functions to detect and locate rogue access points that have been installed on corporate networks by users, including location tracking and probability graphs to help track the likely location of devices.

The system has also been designed to handle wireless denial of service attacks, with each sensor capable of scanning 62 wireless channels and preventing up to 20 simultaneous attacks.

The system is made up of an AirProtect Server, which provides central management of up to 210 AirProtect Sensors. 3Com has also introduced the AirSentry system, to provide protection for SMBs and branch offices.

Jeff Schwartz, product manager for Enterprise Wireless Solutions at 3Com said: "As the number of mobile workers grows and mobility extends beyond laptops to include devices such as Wi-Fi phones and handheld devices, AirProtect provides an essential component to corporate security policy enforcement. It safeguards wireless networks to prevent unauthorized access and data loss, which is essential given the critical nature of data that is being transmitted wirelessly."
