Abu Dhabi-based Warid Telecom is deepening its penetration of the African telecoms network with the launch of an advanced IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) in Uganda.

Through its IMS network Warid will offer VoIP and IP-based multimedia services in the country.

The company is among the first service providers in the world to offer IMS over WiMAX.

Warid Telecom has also invested heavily in South Asia. The company controls Pakistani telecoms operator Wateen, and holds a significant stake in the Bangladeshi telecoms sector.

Warid Telecom is owned by the Abu Dhabi Group, controlled by His Highness Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan.

The group has a large presence in Pakistan and owns Bank Alfalah Ltd., Pakistan's fifth largest bank, as well as a substantial stake in United Bank Limited, the country's third largest bank.
