The selection of regional telco giant Zain's new base has now been narrowed down to Bahrain and Dubai, according to a local newspaper report.

Speaking at a press conference this week marking the rebranding of MTC as Zain, group chief executive Dr Saad Al Barrak said that the third option for the base, Amsterdam, had been ruled out, Bahrain's Gulf Daily News reported.

"The final decision is almost made. We shall reveal it in the next few weeks, possibly before the end of October," Al Barrak said, according to the report.

Zain's local operations in Bahrain have already claimed victory on the move, according to a recent report in The Bahrain Tribune. The paper quoted an unnamed representative of MTC-Vodafone as saying the new base would be located in the Kingdom.

Zain, or MTC as it was known at the time, announced last month its intention to move its headquarters out of Kuwait.

The group, the second largest Arab telecom operator, said its decision was motivated by strict regulation on investments in Kuwait.

Zain operates under the Zain band in Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain and Sudan. In Iraq, it is currently known as MTC Atheer, in Lebanon as MTC Touch, and in 14 sub-Saharan countries in Africa as Celtel.
