Samsung Electronics is hatching a plan to boost sales of its AV products, including camcorders and MP3 players. The company hopes to match the success it has enjoyed with its LCD TV and mobile phone ranges.

Makarand Phadke, AV group manager, said that the company hopes to raise the profile of its new range of camcorders, MP3s and other home products by building on the, "strong brand platform" established by its other product ranges.

"Most people perceive us as an LCD TV brand or a mobile phone brand, so we hope to use that strong brand platform we have at GITEX to build brand equity in camcorders, MP3, Blu-ray players and home theatres, and to make these equally as important as the volume selling of LCD TVs," he says. "We plan to grow very aggressively with camcorders over the next couple of years and with MP3, we have already achieved number two status in the region, which has given us a very strong foothold."

The company's pavilion in Sheikh Rashid Hall features three new flash memory based camcorders, all designed to combine the advantages of flash memory with ease of use, and three new MP3 players in three unique designs.

All three have Bluetooth connectivity, allowing the user to connect to two Bluetooth compatible products at the same time.

"Demand for these products is spiralling," says Phadke. "That is what is exciting about these emerging markets - more so than the volume markets like the US and Europe.

Monthly MP3 sales in the Middle East have trebled since 2006, and Phadke says this is likely to continue throughout 2008/9.

Samsung is also making waves at GITEX Technology Week with the introducion of its 70" LED LCD TV and the Duo Player - a Blu-ray and HDD compatible home theatre system.
