MTC to use new brand name

Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Company will be known under new brand name Zain from Sunday.

Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Co (MTC) will start using its new brand name Zain as of Sunday, the bourse said on Tuesday.

The bourse said in a statement posted on its Web site that the change would also apply to the firm's stock code which will be ZAIN.

Changing the brand name over 21 countries is big task and multi million dollar project. At the same time the company should have reduced the rate on calls. Call rates in Kuwait are one of the highest in the world. You can call India at 375 fils per minute, whereas from India you can call Kuwait 50 fils per minute. It is too expensive to call from Kuwait... compare the rate in Bahrain... Then people end up going for hundi calls(internet calls).

Surprised to see that an accepted and well known MTC generic name has been now changed to Zein. Doesn't sound good, nor seems okay for an international company.
