Network infrastructure provider Huawei will be promoting the benefits of HSPA technology at this year's GITEX show.

The popularity of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technology, which enables mobile broadband access, has rapidly grown over the past year, particularly in the Middle East.

The potential for 3GHSPA broadband deployments in the region is boosted by the limitation of fixed broadband penetration as well as by the complexity of the expanding fixed broadband infrastructure. With only a 9% fixed broadband penetration rate in the region, mobile broadband services are well positioned for success, according to experts.

"We believe HSPA is the mainstream mobile broadband technology for its mature commercial deployment, operation, and ability to provide lower cost per mega byte," said Wang Jiading, president, Huawei Middle East & Gulf, Huawei Technologies. " It also enables faster adoption of new services such as Mobile TV, Mobile VoIP and multi-player interactive games in a cost effective way."

Huawei's customers in the region include UAE telco operator Etisalat, for which it recently completed a sizeable HSPA deployment.

Building on my past knowledge of networking and communications for high speed packet switching, I have the following comment: HPSA can potentially play towards mobile computing the same role Frame Relay and ATM did (or can do) to e-business and internet computing. One difference though, while e-business is dominated by data networking making frame relay (which is packet switching) quite suitable for it, mobile computing is by nature multi-media with voice, image, video and data all flowing over the network, making a form of cell switching (like ATM) more suitable for isochronous traffic handling reasons.
