UAE telco operator Etisalat has taken another step in its global expansion strategy with the launch of its mobile operations in Afghanistan.

The operator announced today that its GSM service is now available through a large part of the country including the capital Kabul with additional coverage to be operational before the start of Ramadan.

"Today is an important day for Etisalat as we extend the number of our operational markets to fourteen countries and export the Etisalat brand into our third market," said Etisalat chairman Mohammad Hassan Omran.

Etisalat launched its Egyptian operations through Etisalat Misr earlier this year.

With mobile penetration of only 8%, Afghanistan was a good opportunity with significant room for growth and development, Omran added.

It will compete on the provision of mobile services in Afghanistan with cellular operators Roshan, Afghan Wireless, and Areeba, a division of Investcom.

Etisalat said as the new entrant its strategy would be based on ‘quality, innovative services and competitive pricing'.

Etisalat Afghanistan will offer a wide range of services including: GPRS & MMS services, ring back tones, missed call notification, and a ‘family & friends' package.

Its services will be available through over 1,000 retailers across the country and through Etisalat's own retail outlets.
