Batelco likely to bid for Kuwait mobile stake

Batelco is likely to bid for the 26% stake on offer in the new mobile phone operator under formation in Kuwait, a representative for the company has hinted.

"Part of Batelco's strategy announced last year was continuous growth. Our concentration is focused on MENA, any opportunity that arises in this area we will look at it very closely," Batelco corporate affairs general manager Ahmed Al Janahi told ITP.net.

To date, 25 firms have registered for participation in the auction for the stake including 11 foreign telecom operators. The deadline for registration is 7 September.

Saudi Telecom confirmed on 25 August that it is one of the bidders and UAE operator Etisalat has also expressed its interest.

Omantel, however, another rumoured bidder, this week ruled itself out of competing in the auction.
