Continued talks between Bahraini telco operator Batelco and its trade union officials is the only way to resolve outstanding issues, Bahrain's Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi said yesterday, according to a report in the local press.

Al Alawi said he was optimistic a solution would eventually be found to end the long-running dispute between the operator and its union and praised the union for its efforts in trying to resolve matters, Gulf Daily News reported.

The minister made the comments during a meeting yesterday with the trade union.

Union officials have been campaigning for many months for a 25% increase in pay packages and for proposed changes to Batelco's current retirement package to be scrapped.

More recently, the union has pushed for the reinstatement of two employees and union members - Majed Suhrab and Faisal Ghazwan - who were recently dismissed from the company.

Batelco is due to hold a board meeting today, where it is expected the issues will be discussed.
