The number of subscribers to the mobile phone service of Etisalat Misr, the Egyptian arm of UAE-based telecoms giant Etisalat, reached one million in the first seven weeks of operation, a company official told Reuters on Sunday.

Etisalat, the third-largest Arab telecoms firm by market value, won an auction for Egypt's third mobile licence in 2006 with a 16.7 billion Egyptian pound ($2.95 billion) bid and is seeking to reach three million subscribers in Egypt by the end of the year.

The company, which launched the service in May, competes with Vodafone Egypt and Mobinil, both of which have built up extensive customer bases over the years.

The Ministry of Telecommunication said in April that the number of mobile phone subscribers in Egypt is expected to double to 40 million within four years. The country has a population of about 73 million people.
