Oman Telecommunications (Omantel) said on Sunday it has no plans to compete for a stake in Kuwait's third mobile phone firm, which is being set up by the government.

Omantel was named as one of at least 17 potential bidders for the 26% stake in a report on Thursday by Kuwait's Al-Wasat newspaper.

"Omantel confirmed it has no plans to compete for the company which the Kuwaiti government intends to establish," the company said in a statement on the bourse website.

Wasat also named Saudi Telecom (STC) and UAE operator Etisalat as potential bidders. Both companies have confirmed their interest.

Bidders must express interest by a September 7 deadline.
