Australian firm Aconex has won a contract to supply its online information management service to the Purple Line section of Dubai's new metro.

Aconex, a provider of collaboration solutions to the construction industry, will provide a solution to control the volume of information generated on the development and to help link the geographically dispersed project team.

"Development of the Purple Line will involve collaboration between some of the world's leading contractors and consultants and over the lifecycle of the development these companies will need to store and exchange hundreds of thousands of documents and correspondence items," Aconex managing director Leigh Jasper explained.

"Through using Aconex, project information can be managed using one online platform. Organizations working on the design and construction of the Purple Line will be able to view, distribute and track all their documents and correspondence at any time and from any location. This will streamline the collaboration process, cut administrative costs such as printing and postage, and reduce risks such as information loss, disputes and delays," he added.

Scheduled to be complete in 2012, the Purple Line is the latest line to be added to Dubai's new metro system, and will connect Dubai International Airport and Jebel Ali Airport.

Parsons Brinckerhoff Middle East, which has the consultancy contract for the Purple Line project, said Aconex was selected because its online collaboration service was "an easy to use system that provides an efficient process for communicating and managing correspondence and documents between teams."

Aconex has operated in the Middle East since 2004 and has offices in Dubai as well as representatives in Jordan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

The Middle East is a major market for the firm given the high volume of construction taking place, particularly in Dubai.

Other projects Aconex has worked on in the region include Dubai's Formula One Theme Park, Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, and Reef Island in Bahrain.
