Distribution heavyweight BDL has settled on Acer's former regional sales chief Sunil Nair as the man to run the new operation it is poised to open in Dubai. Nair will become the general manager for BDL Gulf as soon as he has served his notice period at Microsoft, where he has been a sales manager for the company's entertainment and devices division since leaving Acer last year.

BDL is the largest distributor in Saudi Arabia and recently announced plans to launch a full subsidiary in the UAE after opening offices in Egypt and Bahrain during the last 12 months. Nair will be in charge of building up BDL's presence in the Gulf countries, excluding Saudi Arabia, and attracting the calibre of vendors that the company believes will allow it to challenge other distributors operating out of Dubai.

Tamer Ismail, general manager at Riyadh-based BDL, insists Nair's experience in the Middle East channel will give the company a solid foundation from which to drive the operation forward. "I have worked with Sunil for a long time when he was with a vendor and so I know he is very smart, very active, and I believe he can deliver on the business objectives of BDL in Dubai," said Ismail.

Ismail says BDL Gulf expects to have a complete set-up including HR, finance, sales, stocking and logistics functions by the time it becomes fully operational in October. The company has not yet publicly confirmed any vendor tie-ups, but is believed to be finalising contracts for the Gulf territories with several brands in the motherboard, networking, optical disk drive, storage and hardware sectors. According to the 2007 Channel Middle East Power List, BDL generated sales of US$133m last year, crowning it the largest IT distributor in the Kingdom.
