Sun grants hardware contract to distributor

Aptec awarded rights to distribute Sun’s volume hardware portfolio.

Storage vendor Sun Microsystems has given software distribution partner Aptec the green light to begin selling products from its volume hardware portfolio.

The move, which will see Aptec specialising in AMD and Intel servers, identity management solutions and entry-level storage systems, comes just over a year after Sun initially awarded Aptec a franchise for its full software line-up in the Middle East region.

Gaining the rights to distribute Sun hardware means Aptec will be able to offer resellers in the Middle East the entire range of the vendor's volume products, adding to a portfolio that also includes brands such as Avaya, IBM and Nortel.

Ilyas Mohammed, Sun business unit manager at Aptec, commented: "Moving forward, the Sun team at Aptec is completely geared up to take our partnership to the next level by providing training, pre-sales support, promotions and by maintaining local stock of Sun's AMD and Intel-based servers, workstations, SunRay desktop solutions and entry-level storage products."

Aptec also plans to announce the launch of a loyalty initiative designed to reward and assist partners focused on Sun. Bruno Haubertin, partner and alliances sales organisation manager at Sun Microsystems (pictured), said: "The introduction of Aptec's Partner Loyalty Programme will drive partner selection and encourage partners to develop technical capabilities, be pro-active and work closely to develop Sun's volume business in the region."

Meanwhile, Aptec also announced earlier this week that the operations and back-office functions of daughter company TDME have been integrated into the group.

TDME's IT infrastructure is now based on Aptec's iScala ERP application and its in-house eShop portal, as well as Microsoft Exchange mailing system. TDME - born out of the former Tech Data PC components and enterprise business - is also operating its logistic functions from Aptec's central facility in Jebel Ali and five in-country warehouses.

"Since we are using the same systems, standards and processes more back-office functions can be centralised, which will improve efficiency and productivity of the group," said Mario Veljovic, operations and commercial manager at Aptec.

Although TDME is using parent Aptec's infrastructure, the company continues to operate separately from the group's other distribution activities.
