Bahrain fixed wireless operator Mena Telecom is to showcase its WiMAX network later this month, which was deployed by US equipment manufacturer Motorola.

Earlier this year Bahrain's TRA awarded two National Fixed Wireless Services (NFWS) licences to MTC-Vodafone Bahrain, which bid BD5.5 million ($14.5 million) and Mena Telecom, which bid BD4.5 million for its concession.

"Our aim is to bring the latest technology in the world to the kingdom in order to make Bahrain one of the leaders of WiMAX technology deployment worldwide, and to continue Bahrain's tradition of being the first in the Gulf for introducing new telecoms technology," commented Abdulhakeem Al Khayyat, chairman of Mena Telecom, earlier this year.

Mena Telecom believes this is the largest development in the kingdom's telecoms sector since the introduction of mass market mobile in the late 1980's and forecasts that Bahrain will become one of the first countries in the world to develop a nationwide WiMAX network.

WiMAX will allow Mena Telecom to provide wireless broadband services, fixed telephony services, broadband telephony and VoIP bundles, virtual PBX and IP Centrex solutions, virtual private networks and data networking solutions, nomadic services, and other value-added services such as e-Business and multi-media services.

Mena Telecom is a member of the WiMAX Forum, and the operator says it understands the importance of working with this forum to ensure that the kingdom's views are fully represented and that the systems Mena Telecoms establishes meet both customer and regulatory requirements.

The WiMAX services introduced by Mena Telecom will be in addition to its current portfolio of products and services, which include international fixed landline calls. Mena Telecom also has one of the most popular international prepaid calling cards in the Bahrain market called MenaTalk, which offer up to 80% reductions on international calls.
