The future of home and office printing is wireless, according to printer vendor Lexmark, which has just launched a new range of Wi-Fi colour laser machines.

Speaking following the company's recent IT conference - branded ‘Get More Done With Wireless & Colour' - Lexmark's general manager for the Middle East, François Feuillet, commented: "When we see the trends in the wireless space, the one missing ingredient from the mix is printing. [Modern] work patterns show that customers - whether based in homes or offices - are becoming increasingly mobile and are now demanding more flexible printing options. With our new range of colour laser printers, we can now offer users the ease of portability, combined with high quality print performance," he said.

Lexmark's new Wi-Fi-enabled machines start with the value-priced single-function inkjet, the Lexmark Z1420, then continue with the all-in-one X4550, and conclude with the faster, more business-focused X9350 multifunction printer.

"All our research has pointed to Wi-Fi enabled printing solutions as being what customers desire and what they consider to be a logical progression," added Feuillet.

Feuillet also suggested that whilst the technology to achieve wireless printing - namely Wi-Fi - has been around for some time, the launch of Lexmark's new generation of printers has occurred now in order to give customers cable-free printers at a reasonable price point.

"We could have installed wireless cards into our printers last year, but the cost would have been quite high and this would have necessarily been passed onto the customer," he said. "However, over the past twelve months, we've seen an incredible flattening out of the cost curve. For Lexmark, the main goal is to keep printing economical, so now is the right time to launch this new range when we can ensure affordability."
