Although not yet launched in the Middle East, Apple's iPhone is already selling on regional auction site Souq.com, ITP.net can reveal.

The site currently includes two active iPhone auctions with the highest bid on the 8Gbyte model set at US$1099 (4,035 AED) at the time of writing.

The seller who goes by the name of DXBLouie states that any iPhones currently being sold in the UAE cannot be used with Etisalat or du at this time.

"These phones are locked for use with the AT&T Network only. Anyone selling these phones claiming they're unlocked and will work with Etisalat and du is not telling the truth," the user said.

"Your device will be activated so that you can use all of its features, except for phone functionality. This includes wireless internet, MP3 playback and more," the user adds.

A representative for Souq.com revealed that there have been more than five auctions in the past month for the iPhone.

i think the customer should be well aware of what he/she is buying esp at auctions.

The seller must state that the phone function will not work.

If the buyer still wants to buy it because it has music, video and other functions not to forget the COOL factor. then so be it.

Most mobile phones nowadays are bought for function AND status. So this just takes it to another level.

However i reiterate, the seller must state that the "phone" function will not work.

Did Souq.com commentate on how appropriate, or not, it is to sell an item that is not officially working here?
