UAE telco operator du announced yesterday it has crossed the half million barrier in subscriber numbers, nearly five months after it launched its mobile operations.

The telco officially launched in February.

"The launching of a new operator in an established market is never an easy task and even more so when it is the market with the highest mobile penetration in the world. But we have really pulled together as a team to not only face this task, but achieve our target much earlier than anticipated," du CEO Osman Sultan said in a statement, referring to the company's initial goal to gain 10% of the UAE population.

du has set a long-term target of capturing more than 30% of the mobile market by the end of 2009.

Its rival Etisalat had 5.78 million mobile subscribers as of the end of March.

du is expected to launch fixed line and internet services by the end of this year. It already provides these services to customers in several Dubai freehold residential communities and free zones.
